I love Being a Filipino
By Mario Balbin
I love being a Filipino because Filipinos believe in respect, and hospitality. Filipinos believe in respecting other people even if they are different. When I was growing up in the Philippines, I was taught by my elders to respect other people simply because they are human being like you and me. Being different does not make them less of a person. When you visit a home, the people living in the house will offer you accommodation, food, or drinks to the best of best of their resource as a warmfelt of their hospitality. They are not hesitant to invite you for a lunch or dinner. But yet, this kind of hospitality has been misunderstood by many who thought that profuse hospitality was a form of inferiority and subservience.
And then I move to United States and experienced otherwise. After living here in United States for 30 years, I would say that I love the Filipino culture and tradition. I love my homeland and will visit the Philippines at the end of this year 2009!
