Jeepney Tour-Hidden Hi Fi 1920x1440

HIDDEN HI FI is a cultural and economic development project in Los Angeles’ Historic Filipinotown (Hi Fi) neighborhood. Led by the Hi Fi-based organization Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) in partnership with LA-based social enterprise Public Matters, Hidden Hi Fi illuminates neighborhood assets through interactive events, tours, and experiences that inform and delight. These activities offer residents and visitors alike a vibrant dose of Los Angeles Filipino/Filipino-American flavor: history, art, culture, and food, including an unforgettable Jeepney ride and a travelling tiangge (marketplace).

WHY HIDDEN HI FI?

Filipinos are the largest Asian population in the City of Los Angeles, but the community and this historical neighborhood are often overlooked. Despite receiving its designation from the City’s government in 2002, Historic Filipinotown today has few cultural or physical markers to convey the area’s identity. It is better known for its proximity to the 101 Freeway, Downtown Los Angeles, Echo Park and Silver Lake than as a cultural nexus. Hidden Hi Fi responds to the absence of such markers by developing iconic events and happenings that celebrate local residents, organizations and businesses, and shed light on the area’s hidden Filipino history and culture.

AN EXPERIENCE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

IMG_3318 760x489

Hidden Hi Fi responds to important community needs: to create meaningful jobs for Hi Fi’s young adults, to continue to establish Hi Fi as a nexus of social and cultural relevance for LA’s large, dispersed Filipino population, and to increase visibility for Filipinos and Filipino-Americans and the issues that impact them, such as gentrification, wage theft and the fight of Filipina caregivers for equal and fair labor protections.

THE PROJECT:

  • Connects Filipinos and Filipino-Americans to Hi Fi through interactive experiences, cultural and historical events, and tours. These introduce participants to businesses, organizations, history, community narratives, and media about the neighborhood and Filipinos/Filipino-Americans in LA.
  • Establishes Hi Fi as a hub for arts, culture, and history programming.
  • Supports the generation of new, place-based multimedia works and web-based applications.
  • Engages young adults from Historic Filipinotown in a paid Fellowship program through Public Matters’ Urban Futures Lab (UFL). UFL trains Fellows to lead PWC’s cultural tours, build relationships with local businesses, develop revenue-sharing models, and create marketing materials for tours and Jeepney rentals.
  • Builds wealth within the community by connecting project partners, sponsors, and visitors to local businesses – creating mutually-reinforcing revenue streams and community-driven economic advancement.

ABOUT THE PARTNERS

Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California (PWC) is a 501(c)3, that is located in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles. PWC believes that all people and communities have the right to a healthy, dignified quality of life. Yet so many immigrants are working in jobs that cannot meet their basic needs and living in unhealthy environments because they are isolated, disempowered and overwhelmed by their daily struggle to work and put food on the table. They become victims of wage theft, human trafficking, occupational safety hazards, unhealthy lifestyles and their own despair. PWC focuses on providing programs that help meet the immediate needs of workers and their families while at the same time building their leadership to take collective action for long lasting change.

Although Pilipinos are the largest Asian ethnic group in California and Los Angeles, the struggles of Pilipino immigrants are often invisible. As an anchor institution in Historic Filipinotown, PWC is committed to programs that enhance neighborhood residents’ quality of life, improve access to opportunity, and share the stories of our community.

Public Matters is a Los Angeles-based, award-winning social enterprise. It designs and implements long-term, place-based, socially engaged art, media, education, and civic engagement projects that advance social change. The Public Matters team – made up of artists, educators, media professionals, cultural planners and Fellows – works on projects across disciplinary boundaries to build social, creative, economic and civic capital in communities. www.publicmattersgroup.com
